Eastney, in the south-east corner of Portsea Island, is one of the most varied districts of Portsmouth - built up from the 1860s but with new housing in the 1930s, shaped by its intimate relationship with the Royal Marines and their barracks. This generously-illustrated booklet tells something of its recent history through the memories of more than 35 people that lived or worked there between 1930 and 2004. The interviewees include people from a wide range of occupations, including children, Royal Marines, housewives and a parish priest, giving a variety of viewpoints, frequently entertaining, always stimulating.

The booklet is based on an oral history project run jointly by Portsmouth Museums and Records Service, University of Portsmouth and Portsmouth Royal Dockyard Historical Trust and was supported by The Heritage Lottery Fund.
